Do I inspire you?

Posted on June 26th, 2009

All the talk about the sad ending of  the life of a music genius brought to my mind how I as a artist is thought of in this crazy world.  I am not comparing my work to him at all but he was a “artist” and so I started to think how do I want to be remembered when I am gone from this world?  My work often is based on music that I love.  The Dave Matthews Band has a song “The Space Between” which I based six of my works on in a series called “Spaces”.  It led me in a new direction and a new learning experience in my work.  When I paint I play music and often find my brush doing strokes to the beat.  Jason Mraz is one of my favorites.  I am inspired by many visual things around me but music will always be my biggest influence.  Thank you Michael for the inspiration.

what is a good day for a artist?

Posted on June 24th, 2009

I think some of my best blogs since starting to write are questions people ask me about my life as a artist. What I feel is a good day with my work is a interesting question. My answer is not what you would think. You would guess it would be when I have finished a mixed media painting that I have been hard at work on for weeks. This, in my case does not give me the greatest satisfaction. I always feel a work is never quite done. What does make me feel I have accomplished the most as a artist in a day? It is to have seen something or picked up a new object in my morning walk that starts me thinking about a “new” direction and starting over again in the “creation” process. The creative idea is the best feeling in the world to me.

New Works!

Posted on June 22nd, 2009

I am very excited to be offering new 5 x 7 small works over the internet on a new site I have created to display them. Every week I will be adding a few more new original mixed media works at the price of $75 each. Let me know how you like them! I will continue to have larger works also but hope this idea can help all those people who have said to me they love my work and want to buy but can not afford to. This economy is tough on us all but if you have the chance to buy a original work of art or a print you will never regret buying the original. http://joycehillsmallstudio.blogspot.com

  1. Joyce, as the proud owner of one of your 5×7 collage postcards, I can attest to the value and pleasure in owning a “Joyce Hill original”. Great job on the new blogspot site. These 5×7 works should sell like hotcakes!!

(BTW, while I’m a died-in-the-wool techie, this is my first-ever blog post!! I’ve finally arrived in the 21st century!)

5″ x 7″ original works

Posted on June 19th, 2009

The last few days I have been working hard on some new small original mixed media works to sell on the web.  As artists we are always searching for new ideas to promote our work and make money.  One of my daughter’s friends asked her the other day what my prices were on my work.   She had seen it on my website and loved it.  She has a small new apartment and did not want to hang prints but originals.  This idea I “loved” and felt for her at the same time.  Now there is nothing wrong with prints but  what you gain by having a “real” painting or photo on the wall is so much more.  The most important thing  for me as a artist is knowing you liked my work enough to buy it and invest in me.  So look for my new small works on the web next week for all those people who want a little piece of  my soul.

Where do my ideas for my works come from?

Posted on June 16th, 2009

I was asked by a person who knows me well this question recently in a conversation.  I think the best way to describe where  I get my subject matter is from my experiences.  Yesterday I was doing my usual walk of three miles when I ran across a dead baby bird.  His wing was fanned out to display a beautiful shape.  I thought to myself as I walked away what a great shape and direction that wing had taken and it would make a great shape to include in my next work.  I am a close observer of my world and what is going on around me at all times.  A light on a building, a shape in the windshield of my car, a leaf or flower in bloom  these are all things and many more that start me on a path that can lead to new discoveries  in my world as a artist.

working on finishing the empty space

Posted on June 11th, 2009

Taking a step back to look at my 24 x 24″ latest work I decided to change a few colors as I was not happy with this particular shade of yellow.  There is a balance to achieve in composition and design that until I see it  I feel it is not a finished piece.  When do you feel a painting or work is done?  It is with me just a feeling that something is off.  I wonder how  I know?  Mixed media works because of all the pieces of paper, paint, etc seem to take more effort to connect.  When I do workshops I tell my students you always need a space to rest your eyes.  A space with very little or nothing to balance the worked space.  It is hard for them not to fill the whole space with collage.  This space is very important to me to be right in the composition.  When I question is a piece finished its usually this space that needs some attention in color or shading.  How do you do feel about this space?

am I taking risks?

Posted on June 10th, 2009

I had a interesting talk with my husband this morning  if as a artist I needed to sell my work.  I wonder if that is what I need to feel successful in my work.  I can always use the money but there is more to it than that.  I love when I bring a new work to the gallery to hear what people have to say good or bad.  I win awards in national shows and get accepted into others with jurors that are knowledgeable about the work.  When it all comes down to starting a new work or series of paintings it is me who has to be happy with it.  I am my worst critic but the most important one.

changes to my work, do I or don’t I?

Posted on June 9th, 2009

I thought I was done yesterday with my latest graffiti series mixed media work.  The operative word is “thought”.  It is so easy to overwork your collage.  I try  when I work to step back and pause several times as I progress  to evaluate shapes, balance, colors, and overall composition.  I also, being left handed seem to do the left hand side of my work better to my liking than the right.  This piece I’ve been doing seems to be going in that direction.  The only way to solve this problem and get the composition to work as a whole is to start over in both the right and left areas.  I do this by white washing these areas and starting over.  I continue to fight this a problem but always manage to work through it in the end.

Interesting way of working. It’s so hard to evaluate your own work. Can you post an image?

artist ideas

Posted on June 5th, 2009

The economy is terrible.  Art not something you need to live is not selling that well.  So I who usually work large is thinking about setting up a site to sell small works on.  I hate working small but this past Christmas sold out of some collage postcards that were available at the gallery here.  I can do 5 x 7  images and sell them for less than $100.  Now how to sell them over the internet the cheapest way and the widest audience.  I will keep you posted.
