“Red”
Posted on October 23rd, 2009
This is my latest in a series of four 16″ x 16″ paintings I am working on between others. This time of year many of the art organizations I belong to have art auctions and dinners to help raise needed money to operate. I belong to many but the one not for profit group nearest to my heart is the Western New York Artists Group. It is located at the Art Dialogue Gallery, One Linwood Ave., Buffalo (716-885-2251). They represent me in my hometown plus show my work on a regular basis. I do shows at other galleries around town and in other states but always come back to my roots at this gallery. On October 27th the WNYAG will have their annual dinner/auction at the Saturn Club of small works to benefit the gallery. I did this piece for that purpose. It started with artists telling me how they really like what I do when working with the color red. I have done many of my pieces with red in my LA graffiti series but this one is just shapes and colors with no particular subject matter in mind. I started with my favorite tube of red paint mixing it into the top section of the work. I added the gray section next then the cream in one coat knowing i would be adding textures and under layers of other colors. I love empty space and this is how the cream section functions in my painting. The collage was built at the bottom in the gray section next blending pieces of collage and japanese rice papers. I liked the way the japanese paper had such movement to it and started to work with this idea in the rest of the collage spaces. I added pinks and lavender paints with the red to have a great transition between the colors. Then came line. There is always line in my work as I feel it holds the collage pieces together. Then finally broken pieces of colored glass for more depth to the piece and interest. Before finishing the cream color got texture added with papers, type, and a broken cd which was found on one of my daily works. Let me know what you think and check back for more images in this series “Reds” in the next month.

My latest work “Red Sky at Night LA Delight” graffiti series 24″ x24 ” mixed media work (treated aluminum, acrylic, collage, and photo transfers) has been included in the WNYAG 18th Annual Regional Exhibition opening on Friday, October 9, 2009 at a reception and awards ceremony 7:30-9pm. This show was juried by Judy Carr Beecher of the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. The exhibition is at the Art Dialogue Gallery, One Linwood Ave., Buffalo, NY from Oct. 9 – November 13 2009 A wonderful show of exceptional regional artists works! Hope to see you there.

Dear Miss Hill,
I have a minor correction to your text regarding the show at the Art Dialogue Gallery
I am no longer “of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.” I spent many happy years at the Gallery, from 1984 until 2002 , which is the year I retired. I was the Assistant Director for Administration and Facilities when I left the Gallery but had a thorough knowledge and appreciation of its extraordinary collection from my years as a docent and as the Public Relations Officer.
I found my experience as a juror of the Art Dialogue Show to be an affirmation of what I have always known – Western New York is blessed with an abundance of talented artists.
