am I taking risks?

I had a interesting talk with my husband this morning  if as a artist I needed to sell my work.  I wonder if that is what I need to feel successful in my work.  I can always use the money but there is more to it than that.  I love when I bring a new work to the gallery to hear what people have to say good or bad.  I win awards in national shows and get accepted into others with jurors that are knowledgeable about the work.  When it all comes down to starting a new work or series of paintings it is me who has to be happy with it.  I am my worst critic but the most important one.
